Car key stuck in the ignition

If the key will not come back out of the ignition, the common categories are the gear selector not fully in Park, steering lock pressure, a worn key, or an ignition or interlock fault. A few are safe to check. Do not yank or force the key. Here is what is safe to try, and when to call a mobile locksmith in Brisbane.

Does this sound like your problem?

  • The key will not return to the off position to release.
  • It comes out part of the way then stops.
  • The car is an automatic and simply will not let the key go.
  • The dash shows warnings, or the car seems completely dead.
  • The key or barrel feels loose or different to normal.

Possible causes

These are the usual categories, not a diagnosis. The real cause can only be confirmed by inspecting the car.

Not fully in Park
Many automatics will not release the key unless the selector is truly in Park.
Steering lock pressure
Tension on the steering column can hold the key in place.
Worn or damaged key
A worn key can bind inside the barrel on the way out.
Mechanical ignition fault
A worn barrel or lock mechanism can trap the key.
Interlock or electrical fault
The shifter interlock or its wiring, which controls key release on many cars.

Safe checks you can do

  • Make sure an automatic is firmly and fully in Park.
  • Gently rock the steering wheel side to side while easing the key.
  • Turn the ignition fully to the off position before pulling.
  • Check whether your car needs the brake pressed to release the key.
  • Note if the dash is dead, which can point to a flat vehicle battery.

What to avoid

  • Do not yank or force the key out.
  • Do not use pliers or tools to pull on it.
  • Do not wiggle it hard enough to bend or snap it.
  • Do not spray lubricant into the barrel.
  • Do not drive with the key only part way out.

What an automotive locksmith can check

  • Whether the barrel or lock mechanism is trapping the key.
  • Whether the key is worn or damaged and binding.
  • Free the key and repair or replace the ignition where the fault is mechanical.

When another trade may fit: if the cause is the shifter interlock, the wiring, or a flat vehicle battery, an auto electrician, mechanic or roadside provider may be the better call. We will tell you if that is where it points.

To quote this accurately we need the make, model and year, whether it is a traditional key or push button start, how many keys you have, exactly what happens when you try to release it, and where the car is.

Questions

Why is my key stuck in the ignition?

Common categories are the selector not being fully in Park, steering lock pressure, a worn key, or a mechanical or interlock fault. These are possibilities rather than a diagnosis, and the real cause is confirmed on inspection.

How do I get a stuck key out safely?

Make sure an automatic is fully in Park, gently rock the steering wheel while easing the key, and confirm the ignition is fully off. If it still will not release, stop rather than force it, so the key does not snap in the barrel.

Can you remove a stuck key without damage?

In most cases yes. We free the key and then repair or replace the ignition if the barrel is the cause, on site across Brisbane.

Key stuck right now?

Tell us your make, model and year and what it does. We will tell you what is likely and get to you across Brisbane.
