Ignition barrel spins but nothing happens

If the key turns but the ignition barrel just spins freely, or turns without starting the car, the mechanism inside has usually failed. Forcing it further can cause more damage. This one almost always needs an automotive locksmith to inspect and repair or replace the ignition. Here is what is safe to note and how we can help across Brisbane.

Reviewed by the LockOps automotive locksmith team · Published August 2026 · Last reviewed August 2026. General guidance only. The cause cannot be confirmed without inspecting the ignition.

Does this sound like your problem?

  • The key and barrel spin all the way around freely.
  • The barrel turns but the car does nothing.
  • It feels loose or sloppy compared to normal.
  • It sometimes catches and sometimes just spins.
  • The key can come out while it is still turned.

Possible causes

These are the usual categories, not a diagnosis. A spinning barrel almost always needs inspection to confirm what has failed.

Worn internal mechanism
The parts linking the barrel to the ignition switch wear out.
Broken cam or tailpiece
The piece that drives the switch has broken.
Loose or failed barrel
The barrel no longer locates properly in the housing.
Damage from forcing
Earlier force can strip the internals so nothing engages.
Badly worn key
Less common, but a very worn key can contribute.

Safe things to note

  • Whether it spins all the way around or only part way.
  • Whether it ever catches and starts.
  • That the key is the correct, undamaged one.
  • Stop using it once it is clearly just spinning.
  • Take a photo or short video to show us.

What to avoid

  • Do not keep forcing or spinning the barrel.
  • Do not try to hold the barrel with tools.
  • Do not poke anything into the ignition.
  • Do not follow a video to pull the column apart.
  • Do not keep driving if the key can come out while turned.

What an automotive locksmith can check

  • Inspect the ignition to confirm what has failed inside.
  • Repair or replace the ignition barrel and mechanism.
  • Key the new barrel to your existing key where possible.

When another trade may fit: if the fault is in the ignition switch wiring rather than the mechanical barrel, an auto electrician may follow up, but the barrel and lock side is locksmith work.

To quote this accurately we need the make, model and year, whether it spins fully or catches sometimes, whether the key can be removed while turned, how many keys you have, and where the car is.

Questions

Why does my ignition barrel spin freely?

Usually the internal mechanism, or the cam that drives the ignition switch, has worn or broken so the barrel no longer engages anything. It needs inspection to confirm, and it is almost always a locksmith repair.

Can you fix an ignition that just spins?

Yes. We inspect it, then repair or replace the barrel and mechanism, and where possible key the new barrel to your existing key so you keep one key.

Is it safe to drive like this?

If the key can come out while turned, or it only starts sometimes, it is not reliable and could strand you. It is better to have it inspected before it fails completely.
