Car door lock not working

If a car door lock will not turn with the key, or central locking will not respond, the fault can be the lock barrel, the door mechanism, or the electrics behind central locking. Telling a mechanical lock problem from an electrical one points to the fix. Here is how to tell them apart and when a mobile locksmith in Brisbane can help.

Does this sound like your problem?

  • The key will not turn in the door lock.
  • The key turns but the door will not unlock.
  • Central locking does not respond on that door.
  • One door works and another does not.
  • The lock feels stiff, gritty or seized.

Possible causes

These are the usual categories, not a diagnosis. Which one it is can only be confirmed by inspecting the door.

Worn or seized lock barrel
The door lock itself is stiff, worn or failing to turn.
Jammed door mechanism
The linkage behind the lock has jammed so nothing moves.
Central locking fault
The actuator or wiring for power locking on that door has failed.
Worn key
A key too worn to turn the door lock cleanly.
Grit or moisture
Dirt or water in an outer lock, common on doors rarely used with a key.
A quick way to narrow it down: if the key will not physically turn, it points to the lock barrel or a worn key, which is locksmith work. If the key turns fine but central locking will not respond, it points to the actuator or wiring, which is more often an auto electrician. That split is the fastest way to know who to call.

Safe checks you can do

  • Try the key gently in the lock and note whether it turns at all.
  • Try another door to see if only one is affected.
  • Check whether the remote or interior switch still locks the others.
  • Note whether the lock is stiff, gritty or seized.
  • Try a spare key if you have one.

What to avoid

  • Do not force the key hard in a stiff door lock.
  • Do not spray random lubricants or oils into the lock.
  • Do not lever or pry at the door.
  • Do not keep operating a jammed mechanism.
  • Do not assume it is the key before trying another door.

What an automotive locksmith can check

  • Whether it is the lock barrel, the mechanism or the key.
  • Repair or replace the door lock barrel, keyed to your existing key where possible.
  • Extract a broken key or clear a jammed lock.
  • Cut a fresh key if the key is the problem.

When another trade may fit: if central locking fails on a door where the key and lock work fine, the actuator or wiring is the likely cause, which is auto electrician work. We will tell you if it points that way.

To quote this accurately we need the make, model and year, which door is affected, whether the key turns or not, whether central locking works on the other doors, and where the car is.

Questions

Why will my key not turn in the car door?

Usually the door lock barrel is worn or seized, or the key itself is worn. Try another door and a spare key to narrow it down. The real cause is confirmed by inspecting the lock.

Is it the lock or the central locking?

If the key will not physically turn, it is the lock or the key, which is locksmith work. If the key turns fine but power locking does not respond, it is the actuator or wiring, which is more often an auto electrician. That split guides who to call.

Can you repair a car door lock?

Yes. We repair or replace the door lock barrel, clear jams and extract broken keys, and where possible key a new barrel to your existing key so you keep one key.

Door lock giving trouble?

Tell us your make, model and year and which door. We will tell you whether it is a lock or an electrical job.
