Car key remote buttons not working

If your remote will not lock or unlock the car but the key still starts it, the remote side has failed while the transponder is fine. The cause is usually a flat fob battery, worn buttons, or a board or programming issue. A new battery does not fix every remote. Here is what to check and when a mobile locksmith in Brisbane can help.

Does this sound like your problem?

  • The buttons do nothing, but the key still starts the car.
  • Only some of the buttons work.
  • You have to be right next to the car for it to respond.
  • It works one minute and not the next.
  • The fob was dropped or got wet.

Possible causes

These are the usual categories, not a diagnosis. The remote is separate from starting the car, so a dead remote does not always mean a dead key.

Flat fob battery
The most common cause and the easiest first check.
Worn buttons
The contacts under the buttons wear out with years of use.
Cracked case or water
Damage that has reached the board inside the fob.
Board or transmitter fault
The electronics inside the remote have failed.
Lost sync or programming
The remote has dropped its pairing with the car.

Safe checks you can do

  • Fit a fresh fob battery of the correct type.
  • Check the buttons are not cracked or sticking.
  • Try from close to the car and from a few angles.
  • Confirm the key still starts the car, which it often will.
  • Try a spare remote if you have one.

What to avoid

  • Do not assume a new battery fixes every remote.
  • Do not buy a replacement before checking it can be programmed.
  • Do not force the case open and damage the board.
  • Do not keep pressing hard on worn buttons.
  • Do not follow a reset video that could unpair a working key.

What an automotive locksmith can check

  • Whether it is a battery, button, board or programming fault.
  • Repair the case and buttons, or supply a new remote.
  • Program a replacement remote to the car so the buttons work.

When another trade may fit: if central locking fails even with a known good remote, the cause can be vehicle wiring or a door actuator, which is auto electrician work. We will tell you if it points that way.

To quote this accurately we need the make, model and year, whether it is a remote head key, separate fob or smart key, whether the key still starts the car, exactly what the buttons do, and where the car is.

Questions

My remote stopped but the car still starts, why?

The remote buttons are separate from the transponder that starts the car, so the remote can fail while the key still starts the engine. It is usually a battery, worn buttons, a board fault, or lost sync.

Will a new battery fix my remote?

Sometimes, but not always. If the fault is worn buttons or the board inside, a fresh battery will not help. We test it to find the real cause before replacing anything.

Does a replacement remote need programming?

Usually yes. A remote has to be coded to the car to operate the locking, so supply and programming go together. We do both on site.

Remote not responding?

Tell us your make and model and what the buttons do. We test, repair or replace and program on site.
